Evening Grosbeak Makes Its Debut

May 8, 2011  |  Categories: Backyard Birds, Birds

This is a new bird to our back yard feeder. It was a thrill when we first saw it. We realized after a while the thrill was short lived when they took control of the feeder. They are  known for their excessive eating habits. The  Evening Grosbeak likes to eat, and eat they do. The Evening Grosbeak first appeared in mid April and they stayed around for  two to three weeks  and then moved on.

Known as transients in New England and are only seen occasionally as large wintering flocks.  We were happy that we did not have a large flock but only a dozen or so making the damage minimal. Evening Grosbeak are known to fly in large winter flocks so only having a few was enjoyable.

The males bright yellow eyebrow and it’s dark head made the yellow stand out as it faded into its golden yellow belly and lower back. The female is not as bright , It is gray overall with a yellow tainted under part and white under tail coverts.

Evening Grosbeak are known for their massive bill, and it’s incredible strength.  It may have one of the strongest bill’s for any bird in North America. Its bill is used to open sunflower seeds which is one of Evening Grosbeak main food source.
