Endangered Bats of North America

Bats are increasingly becoming endangered. It is estimated that roughly one-fourth of the 950 bat species worldwide are classified as endangered or threatened. Of the 45 species of bats found in the continental United States, six are federally-listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act of 1973. These species include:

Lesser long-nosed (Leptonycteris curasoae yerbabuenae) - Listed in 1988

Mexican long-nosed bat (Leptonycteris nivalis) - Listed in 1988

Little Mariana fruit bat (Pteropus tokudae) (Guam) - Listed in 1984

Mariana fruit bat (Mariana flying fox) (Pteropus mariannus mariannus) (Guam) - Listed in 1984

Virginia big-eared bat (Corynorhinus (Plecotus) townsendii virginianus) - Listed in 1979

Ozark big-eared bat (Corynorhinus (Plecotus) townsendii ingens) - Listed in 1979

Gray bat (Myotis grisescens) - Listed in 1976

Hawaiian hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus semotus) (Hawaii) - Listed in 1970

Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis) - Listed in 1967
